If you damage your rental vehicle, the rental company typically charges you up to your excess for the damage caused, and takes it directly from your credit card that you will have provided at the time of rental. A policy with Cover4Rentals will reimburse that amount to you up to GBP 12,000.
You are covered when hiring a car from any rental company except Wheego or Panek. Rentals from Wheego or Panek are not covered under this policy.
If Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in your rental agreement then the rental company agrees not to charge you the full cost of repairing or replacing the rental car if it’s damaged or stolen — but you still pay the excess shown on your rental agreement.
In most parts of the world (e.g., Europe and the UK), CDW is usually (but not always) included as standard in the rental price.
In North America, this is different. CDW is not always included — it can be an optional add‑on you must buy separately. Many renters from outside North America are surprised by this difference because they expect CDW to be included automatically.
Cover4Rentals provides coverage for the excess unless CDW is not covered by either the Rental Company or Cover4Rentals. CDW is covered automatically in the Cover4Rentals USA & Canada policy and optionally in its Worldwide Policy.
For example, you suffer an accident with GBP 10,000 damage:
Rental company provides CDW and a GBP 1,500 excess you will be charged GBP 1,500 which will be refunded by Cover4Rentals.
Rental company does not have CDW cover but you have purchase this from Cover4Rentals. Cover4Rentals will reimburse the full GBP 10,000 charged by the Rental Company.
In both case you are fully covered.
The rental vehicle cannot be a motorhome, campervan, caravan, trailer, van, pickup (including pickups with a fitted hard-top canopy), minibus, truck, motorcycle, motorbike, moped, off-road or recreational vehicle, or any non-passenger-carrying vehicle. The rental vehicle must be a car and cannot be designed to carry more than 7 people, including the driver, cannot have a retail price over GBP 75,000 (or the equivalent in local currency), and cannot be more than 10 years old. Please note that 4×4 vehicles are covered only if they are designed primarily for use on public roads and are hired under a rental agreement from a rental company or car club.
